The concentration of venues, festivals, and music education institutions in a small, densely connected country means that Dutch producers grow up surrounded by electronic music as a living, breathing culture rather than a niche interest. Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and Utrecht form a creative triangle that has produced more globally influential producers, DJs, and labels than cities ten times their size in other countries.
Add the Dutch cultural disposition toward technical precision and artistic experimentation, a club culture that has always valued musical quality over celebrity, and a festival infrastructure that gives producers real stages to test their music — and you have the conditions for a continuous production of world-class electronic music.
The History
Dutch electronic music's global story begins in the late 1980s and early 1990s with the emergence of Rotterdam gabber — a brutally fast, heavily distorted techno subgenre that was uniquely Dutch in its aggression and its cultural identity. While gabber never achieved mainstream global success, it established the Netherlands as a country willing to push electronic music into extreme territory.
The 1990s also saw the rise of Dutch trance — softer, more melodic, and globally successful. Labels like Tsunami Records and artists like Ferry Corsten and Tiësto defined an era of trance music that reached audiences worldwide. This was the first time Dutch electronic music became a genuine export product.
The 2000s and 2010s brought the global EDM boom, and Dutch artists were at its centre. Tiësto, Martin Garrix, Afrojack, Hardwell, and Armin van Buuren — all Dutch — dominated festival main stages globally. The Netherlands had become not just a producer of electronic music but the world's most reliable exporter of it.
The current generation of Dutch producers is moving in a different direction: toward emotional depth, melodic sophistication, and long-term artistic identity over festival spectacle. Labels like Waalhalla Records and artists like Jax Lukken represent this direction.

Jax Lukken & Julien de Waal
Jax Lukken is the artist name of Julien de Waal, a Dutch-French melodic EDM producer and DJ based in the Netherlands. The project represents the contemporary direction of Dutch EDM: away from festival spectacle and toward emotionally resonant, vocally driven dance music with genuine artistic depth.
The Jax Lukken project is built around a specific artistic identity — Surrender. Awaken. — that runs through every production decision, every track, and every release. It's not a genre description. Sprinkal & Related Projects
Sprinkal is a collaborative project in the Jax Lukken / Waalhalla Records orbit, focused on connecting emerging artists and producers with the infrastructure, sound design, and creative community built around the label.

Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE)
The Amsterdam Dance Event is the world's largest electronic music conference and festival, held annually in Amsterdam every October. Over five days, ADE transforms Amsterdam's club venues, theatres, and conference spaces into the global centre of the electronic music industry.
